In the menu bar, click on the Apple logo. Select About This Mac. A window will appear. Your version of macOS/OS X will be displayed below the letters OS X or macOS. It should say Version 10.*. Autosave, file recovery and finding old deleted files in Microsoft Word 2016 for OS X.
I had the same problem. I am using Word and Excel 15.3.1 for Mac (Personal Office 365).
But the lack of list of recent files was only one of the problems. I was also having to log back into my Microsoft ID each time I started Word or Excel, etc. Neither program was remembering any of my preference settings either. (each time I logged back in- the preferences were lost from the previous time.) Also, if either program crashed, then the autosave files were not being save either. Everything else seemed to work fine.
I tried using another link which described how to fully delete and re-install the program to fix this. I thought that I followed all of the steps, but when finished the same problem still existed. I then started a Help Chat with Microsoft Support and they did the same the via remote access and as I watched on the screen, they pretty much repeated the same steps- but when they were doing it--- it worked!!! Now all of the functionality is working and all preferences and recent files are being saved. Auto-restore files also working!!!
My guess, is that some how during the first install something got messed up in one of the Cabinets and my attempt at deleting everything was not complete. Also, my son had used my Mac to access Office 365 for Students prior to me installing personal Office 365, and I think there were some settings left over from that usage that also needed to be deleted. Just a guess, however. Which media player is best for mac free. Good luck and my suggestion is the complete delete and re-install of Office 365.
