I am currently writing my thesis and I really wanted to make use of Word's built-in functionality, hoping that it would make my life easier, but it appears that it has made it more difficult instead. After I spent about 45 minutes formatting the Bullets & Numbering and linking them to different heading styles, I though I was ready to go. Everything went reasonably well after that point until one beautiful day when I opened my document (stored in OneDrive) to see that my headings are no longer numbered for some peculiar reason. I was very unhappy with that and wasted 20 more minutes of my time redoing the formatting. Then everything was fine again.

Office 2010 for Windows with service pack 2 or later and Office 2011 for Mac. The documents on the PC originated in Microsoft Word 2010 with service pack 2. Level as it is in Word on the PC: many web pages load as a shattered mess.

For like a week or so. I inserted a new line and formatted it as a heading to see that instead of being formatted as 'Appendix 10' it was formatted 'Appendix 2'. I pressed undo and decided to copy paste the title from the last Appendix 9 and just change it.

It was then automatically formatted as 'Appendix 10'. As an extra bonus, my formatting of Level 2 headings in all previous parts of the document was messed up again (this is totally random - even if we assume that the copy-paste thing changed the settings of Level 1 headings somehow, how could Level 2 headings be affected?). Moreover, I always set up my Bullets & Formatting this way: And as soon as I close the document and reopen it, I see that Word has set up the Bullets & Numbering this way: This is just beyond unacceptable. I can't trust Word to do anything for me anymore, if it can't even remember its own settings. Not only doesn't it provide an easy, user-friendly way to set these things up, but it also can't figure how to remember the custom settings I as user have provided. This is the second time it happens. Next time I'll say bye-bye to Office 365. Avast for mac.
