Why Can't I View My Cameras On Mac For Onix Using Chrome
Let me start by stating that I myself am a novice– moderately advanced perhaps, but still learning this stuff. There are basically two ways you can set up your Hikvision for recording surveillance videos: Method 1: The easiest and least expensive way to do this is to purchase software that will enable you to view your camera's video, set up motion detection for video recording to your Mac and many other features. The two apps I would recommend that you consider are Evocam and SecuritySpy. I have used both. Currently I prefer SecuritySpy but it is more expensive than Evocam ($50 versus $30 for Evocam). With either of these apps you can easily set up your Hikvision camera for local and remote monitoring, motion detection, recording of still photos or movie files, email alerts, FTP uploading, etc.
If you go this route I would be happy to help you with your configuration. Method 2: Using your camera in conjunction with a network attached storage device (NAS).
This is a HARDWARE solution rather than a purely software solution. A NAS box as the name suggests, attaches to your local area network usually by plugging directly into your router via ethernet cable. A NAS usually contains 2 or more hard disk drives. The article that you refered to in your original post discusses the use of a NAS for recording and viewing video from a Hikvision camera. It gets a bit confusing here because different NAS units support different communication protocols. This is discussed briefly in that link.
Google Chrome comes with numerous icons available, all of which can be altered from the Google Chrome “Properties” menu (or the “Get Info” menu on Mac). If you don’t like the available icon choices, however, you can download and install a new icon from online.
Until just very recently the Hikvision camera could only be configured and connected to a NAS that utilizes the NFS protocol. At the time that post was written that was still true.
But now the newest Hikvision firmware allows you to configure recording from a Hikvision to a NAS using CIFS protocol. Believe me, this is not as complicated as it seems.
In my case I purchased a Synology DiskStation DS214 NAS from Amazon for $300. I also purchased two 2TB hard drives for the two drive bays in the DiskStation.
My total cost was $498. This is one of the low to moderately priced NASs and so you can see that this is considerably more expensive than going with method 1. I had no prior experience with NAS devices so it took me a day or so to figure things out. But now that I have it set up I am very pleased with it.
Not only do I have an excellent way to record and view surveillance video (as detailed in that link you provided), but the DiskStation has many other features that are quite attractive. Right now I am using my NAS for two main purposes– video surveillance with my Hikvision camera and TimeMachine back-ups. Be forewarned that if you go the NAS route there is a significant learning curve involved if you are not already familiar with this technology. But with a little help it is doable by anyone who is technologically inclined. Let me know if you have any questions about all of this. Your decision should be based upon exactly what you want to accomplish, how much you are willing to spend ( in terms of money and time). Kalev28, I would be happy to try and help you get set up.
The main reason you need the IVMS software is so that you can discover the ip address of your camera and change it so that it will be viewable on your network. After you set the ip address on your camera, theoretically you don't need the IVMS software any more. It is useful, however, for setting your camera parameters and such. But you can also do this through a regular web browser once you have your ip address set up. Once you have your camera configured for your network you just simply add the camera as a video device in SecuritySpy and then setup the various settings such as motion detection, video quality, etc. In SecuritySpy.
